Heatwave Hits Lohegaon and Shivajinagar in Pune

Pune is facing a very hot situation right now! For three days in a row, the temperature has gone past 40°C (104°F). This is the hottest April the city has seen since 2016. In places like Lohegaon, the temperature hit 41.2°C, and in Shivajinagar, it reached 40.8°C. These numbers are much higher than what’s normal for this time of year.

Because of this extreme heat, many problems are happening in the city. There’s 15% more ground-level ozone in the air, which can be harmful. Also, people are using a lot more electricity—22% more than last week! The electricity demand is very high, and it’s close to what the local grid can handle.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that this hot weather will continue for at least 72 more hours. They say a high-pressure system is sitting over central India, which is causing fewer clouds and little rain. This makes it even hotter.

To help people stay safe, local authorities have made some changes. They’re adjusting work hours for outdoor workers so they can avoid the hottest times of the day, which is from 12 PM to 4 PM.

The Pune Municipal Corporation has also set up 45 water stations in busy areas to help people stay hydrated.

Hospitals are seeing more patients too. There’s been a 30% rise in heat-related issues, with 127 cases of heat exhaustion reported in just 3 days. Doctors are telling everyone to drink plenty of water—at least 3 to 4 liters every day.

Even farmers are feeling the heat. Many are noticing that their crops are maturing faster, but they also need more water.

The Agriculture Department says about 15,000 hectares of farmland around Pune are suffering from dry conditions and might see a drop in crop yields by 8-12%.
