Wanawadi police have taken action against a 45-year-old house owner for not giving information about his tenants to the police station. This happened because the owner didn’t follow the rules written in Section 68(B) of the Maharashtra Police Act.
The house owner, who’s many houses in Wanawadi area of Pune, didn’t check the background of three people who started living in his houses since January 2023. The rules say that house owners must give all papers about new tenants to the police within one day. Police data shows that almost half of the house owners in Pune aren’t following these rules properly in the first three months of 2023.
Police officers say that it’s very important for house owners to keep proper papers of their tenants to help keep the city safe. The law says owners must give police many details about tenants, like their ID proof, where they work, and where they lived before. In the last six months, police have found 234 similar cases in Pune where owners didn’t follow these rules.
The police found out about this case during a regular check on March 15, 2023. Now, the house owner might’ve to pay a fine of up to ₹5,000. If someone breaks this rule many times, they can also go to jail for up to three months.
Reports from Pune Police show that when house owners properly check their tenants’ details, crimes in those areas go down by 28%. The reports also show that in 73 out of 100 solved crimes, police could catch criminals quickly because they’d correct information about tenants.
Wanawadi Police are now teaching house owners about why it’s important to keep proper records of tenants. They say that if everyone follows the rules, police can solve crimes in houses much faster. To make things easier, police have also made a website where house owners can fill in their tenants’ details online. This will help them follow the rules better.
