Heatwave Hits 42.7°C in Pune, IMD Issues Warning

Pune is facing very high temperatures, with the hottest recorded day reaching 42.7°C in Lohegaon on April 9, 2025. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned people to be careful during this extreme heat.

The rising temperatures in Pune are due to many new buildings and roads being built. Places like Lohegaon and Shivajinagar, where there’s a lot of construction, are getting hotter. The loss of trees and parks makes it worse, creating “urban heat islands” where it’s much hotter than in other areas.

During the day, temperatures are now about 3°C higher than normal. The IMD tells everyone to avoid going outside between 11 am and 4 pm when it’s the hottest. The air is also very humid, which makes it feel even hotter and can cause problems for people.

This heatwave isn’t new. Recent years have shown that Pune often experiences temperatures between 42-43°C. This trend suggests that Pune’s climate may be changing, and that we need to be more careful about how we build our city.

To stay safe during this heat, the IMD says to drink plenty of water, wear light and loose clothes, and stay out of the sun as much as possible. People in hot areas like Lohegaon and Shivajinagar should check the weather often to stay informed.

The high temperatures affect daily life in Pune. With more buildings and changing weather, it’s important for the city to plan better and create buildings that can handle the heat in the future.
