In Pune, there’s a system for pet cat registration that started in 2022-23. However, not many people are registering their cats. Only 217 cats have been registered in three years, while 2,909 dogs were registered in the same time. This shows that many cat owners aren’t following the rules for registration.

At first, no cats were registered in 2022-23. But in the next year, 104 cats were registered, and the number went up a little to 113 in 2024-25. This still shows that not enough people are registering their cats compared to dogs.

To register a cat, owners must provide important papers like vaccination records, proof of where they live, and photos of their cats. This is similar to what dog owners need to do. But the low number of cat registrations means there might be some problems or fears that cat owners have about the process.

The low number of registered cats is making it hard for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to manage stray cats. Without knowing how many cats are owned, it’s tough to tell the difference between owned cats and stray ones. This can make it hard to run programs that help control the cat population and keep them safe.

The current situation shows that the registration process needs to be easier and more people need to know about it. The PMC needs more cat owners to join the registration to better manage the cat population in the city.

If this trend continues, it may be difficult to create good programs for cat welfare in Pune. To help both pet and stray cats, there needs to be more teamwork between the PMC and cat owners.
