Mumbai Airport to Shut for 6 Hours in May for Runway Maintenance

Mumbai International Airport has announced a big plan to make the airport better. They’ll spend ₹10,000 crore on new buildings and facilities. But first, they need to fix the runways before the rainy season comes.

On May 8, 2025, both runways at the airport will be closed for six hours, from 11 in the morning to 5 in the evening. This means planes won’t be able to land or take off during this time. The airport has told all airlines about this six months early so they can change their flight times.

The airport needs to check if the runways are safe for planes during the rainy season. Workers will look at the water pipes, runway floors, and other important things. This will help stop problems like water collecting on the runways when it rains heavily.

To help pay for all these improvements, the airport wants to increase some fees. People flying within India will need to pay ₹325 extra, and people flying to other countries will pay ₹650 extra. A special group called AERA is checking if these new fees are fair.

The airport chose to do this work before the rainy season starts because that’s when the runways need to be strongest. Even though closing the runways for six hours will cause some problems, it’s important for everyone’s safety.

The airport is doing all this work to make sure passengers can travel safely and comfortably. They want to make Mumbai Airport one of the best airports in India, and these repairs and improvements will help them do that.

The upgrades come as Pune crime incidents have shown the importance of maintaining robust security infrastructure at major transportation hubs.
