Pune city is facing a big water problem. Almost half of the people living there don’t get water daily in 2023. The city office has made new rules like giving water on alternate days and asking big companies to use less water. They’re spending Rs. 275 crore to fix old pipes and build new water tanks, but this work will finish only by end of 2024.
People are now buying water from private tankers more than before. The cost of these tankers has gone up by 32% since January. Areas like Baner, Balewadi, and Wagholi need the most water tankers, with about 850 tankers coming every day. Tanker owners have bought more trucks to supply water, but this is harming village areas’ groundwater.
The city’s east areas use 28% more water than central areas. The water department found that broken pipes waste about 380 million liters of water daily. This problem, along with less water in Khadakwasla, Panshet, and Varasgaon dams, makes the situation worse.
Big IT companies in Hinjewadi and Magarpatta are trying to save water. They’re collecting rainwater and using old water again after cleaning. This has helped them use 25% less fresh water, but only 18% of buildings in Pune do this.
Many homes in Pune have started using special taps that save water, and some keep extra water tanks for emergency. The city office wants people to use 30% less water by teaching them good water habits.
The city is also catching people who steal water. Now, if someone is caught stealing water, they’ve to pay Rs. 50,000 as fine, which is much more than before.
Latest local news shows that Pune’s water shortage problems continue to affect daily life in the city.
