A 42-year-old software engineer from Pune has been sent to jail for three months because he didn't pay his wife the money he was supposed to give her every month. The Family Court said he should pay her Rs 25,000 each month, but he didn't pay for a long time.

In India, if someone doesn't follow the court's orders about money, they can get into serious trouble, even go to jail. The court had warned this man many times over 18 months, and he owed more than Rs 4.5 lakhs by the end.

The man works for a big IT company and earns Rs 24 lakhs a year. He said he was having money problems because he needed to take care of his old parents and pay for his house. But the court didn't agree with him. They said he makes enough money to pay his wife and still live well.

The couple got divorced in 2020 after seven years of marriage. The wife, who's 38 years old and takes care of the home, asked the court for money to help her live. The court agreed in 2021 and told her husband to pay her every month.

Data from the Pune Family Court shows that cases of people not paying alimony have gone up by 32% since 2019. In 2022, there were 476 cases, and some even led to jail time for those who didn't pay.

The court said it's very important to follow alimony rules because they help take care of former spouses. The judge mentioned that many people rely on this money to live.

The man can get out of jail early if he pays all his dues within 45 days. The court also ordered that 30% of his salary should go directly to his ex-wife to make sure he pays her in the future.
