Pune Police caught a teenage boy who was stealing vehicles from the city’s Hadapsar area on Tuesday. The 17-year-old boy was found guilty of stealing five different vehicles. After his arrest, police solved five cases that were pending for many days.
In recent months, more young people have been caught stealing vehicles, with numbers going up by 23% in the last three months.
The young thief had a clever way of breaking into vehicles, especially two-wheelers like bikes and scooters. He’d steal them late at night, between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM, when everyone was sleeping. The police found three motorcycles and two scooters worth ₹3.75 lakhs that he’d stolen from different places in Hadapsar during September and October 2023.
Police studies show that 68% of young people who steal vehicles come from poor families. These children often don’t get proper education or training to learn useful skills. This makes them more likely to commit crimes. Now, the police are trying to find ways to help such children stay away from crime.
Senior Police Officer Rajesh Kumar, who led this case, found that the boy carefully chose vehicles that were easy to steal. The police team worked very hard for three days to catch him. They looked at videos from 47 CCTV cameras and four different police stations worked together to find the stolen vehicles.
After this case, Pune Police has made a special team to stop young people from committing crimes. They’ll spend ₹50 lakhs to teach and help these children. This money will be used for special classes, training programs, and helping their families too.
The police believe that by helping these young people with education and support, they can reduce vehicle theft cases by 35% by next year. They’re also asking parents and teachers to keep a close watch on children and guide them properly to prevent them from choosing the wrong path.
