Pune Traffic Police has started new parking rules on Baner Road to help reduce traffic jams. These rules will start from December 1, 2023, and will affect around 3,200 vehicles that park on this road every day during busy hours from 9 in the morning to 8 at night.
To make sure everyone follows these rules, the police have put 15 traffic officers on duty and installed 24 cameras on the 2.8-kilometer road. The road has been divided into three parts – 40% space for big vehicles like trucks and buses, 35% for people who live nearby, and 25% for people who come to visit for a short time.
Everyone who wants to park their vehicle will need to use the Pune Traffic App on their mobile phone. This app will help them find parking spaces quickly and will also send them a fine if they break any rules. The new system will help people find parking in just 4 minutes instead of the 12 minutes it used to take earlier.
If someone breaks the parking rules, they’ll have to pay a fine. For the first time, the fine is ₹500, but if they break rules again within 30 days, they’ll have to pay up to ₹2,500. The police think that because of these fines, most people will follow the rules properly.
The rules also say that during the day (8 AM to 6 PM), shops and offices can use the parking spaces meant for houses. But in the evening and night, these spaces are only for people who live there. This clever way of sharing parking spaces helps fit more vehicles without building new parking areas.
People who want to park regularly need to first put their vehicle information on the city’s website. There are special parking spots for ambulances, old people, and disabled persons, which make up 8% of all parking spaces. Most vehicle owners have already registered for the new system, and the police expect everything to work smoothly by January 15, 2024.
The initiative is part of Pune’s broader effort to modernize its transportation infrastructure across the growing city.
