Pune’s MNGL Announces Price Hike for CNG and PNG

Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) has raised the prices of compressed natural gas (CNG) and piped natural gas (PNG) in Pune. This change starts on April 9, 2025. The cost of CNG has increased by ₹0.75 per kilogram, making it ₹89.75. PNG prices have also gone up to ₹50.65 per SCM.

This price hike will affect people living in Pune city, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and nearby areas. Autorickshaw drivers are worried they might’ve to raise fares to cover the higher costs. However, CNG is still cheaper than petrol and diesel. In fact, CNG is more than 60% less than petrol and about 40% less than diesel for people who drive vehicles.

This increase follows earlier price changes in 2024, including a ₹1.10 increase in December. In total, prices went up by ₹5.50 last year. MNGL says these changes are due to rising costs of getting the gas, which went from $6.50 to $6.75 per mmbtu, and higher prices set by oil companies.

MNGL has over 80 CNG stations to help its customers. They plan to add more stations, especially in rural areas. The company tries to keep services reliable and affordable for everyone, even when prices go up.

The price includes government taxes like excise duty and VAT, which make up around 15% of the increase. Because of changes in global energy prices, MNGL needs to adjust prices from time to time to keep running smoothly.

People have different feelings about the price increase. Commercial vehicle drivers are most affected. But CNG still remains a good option for saving money on fuel, even with these new price changes.
