Summer temperatures in Maharashtra have been changing a lot. Recently, a group called Prayas Energy Group, based in Pune, found that heat levels are getting higher, especially in the Konkan and Western Maharashtra areas. Their research shows that there are now more long hot days and nights than before. This change in temperature is different from what we used to see in the past, pointing to bigger climate changes in the area.
Because of these rising temperatures, health officials are paying more attention. For example, in March 2025, there were 28 cases of heatstroke reported in Maharashtra. In late April 2024, there were nearly 15 hot days in a row, showing that the heat is becoming more extreme. This is risky for people’s health and makes it hard for them to cool down at night when they usually would.
An important tool called the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) shows that minimum temperatures are now higher than they were 30 years ago. This means the heat patterns are changing a lot. These findings tell us that we need better ways to keep track of the heat and understand how it affects people’s health.
Researchers also say we need a local heat index to help warn people about heat and check how it affects health. This would help us know how comfortable people feel and predict health problems in different groups and areas.
The study suggests that we may need to change how we manage heat. The long heat and fewer cool days make it hard for health officials and energy planners. Old ways of dealing with heat mightn’t work anymore.
These findings are important for cities, health plans, and energy systems in Maharashtra. With the rising temperatures and more health issues, everyone from energy companies to city governments needs to work together to face these new challenges.
