In Pune, the number of reported sexual assault cases went up by 12.8% in 2022. There were 892 cases compared to 791 in 2021. One serious case involved a 32-year-old woman who was hurt by her husband and father-in-law in the Hadapsar area. This case made local authorities take quick action to help the victim and start legal steps.
The woman, who got married three years ago, went to the Hadapsar police on October 15, 2023. She shared that the abuse started soon after her marriage in 2020. She said the assaults happened many times from January 2021 to September 2023, and both her husband and father-in-law threatened her not to tell anyone.
Police arrested her husband, who's 35 years old, and her father-in-law, who's 58. They're facing serious charges under Indian laws. The police team, led by Senior Inspector Ravindra Shelke, has gathered important proof, like medical reports and statements from neighbors.
This case highlights a worrying problem of domestic violence in Pune. In 2022, 42% of sexual assault cases involved people known to the victims. Local support centers reported a big increase in counseling for domestic violence, helping many women.
Women's rights groups are now pushing for better laws and protections for victims. In response, the Pune Police have created a special team to deal with these cases and set up a 24-hour helpline.
The victim is receiving help through a state program that offers counseling, legal support, and temporary housing. The court case is set to start in the next 30 days, following the rules for such serious matters.
