Pune city is getting very busy, and there are five main places where traffic gets stuck a lot. During busy hours, people can wait for more than 45 minutes to get through. The worst spot is Swargate Junction, where over 12,000 vehicles try to pass each hour. Even though they’ve tried to fix this with smart traffic lights and special lanes, it only helped a little, making wait times shorter by just 12%.
Another place with heavy traffic is Hadapsar-Mundhwa Road. Here, many homes and businesses are being built, but the roads aren’t getting better fast enough. Studies show that 78% of people take an extra 32 minutes to get through this road during the morning rush. The same problem happens in the evening from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM.
The University Road-FC Road area is also a big problem. About 9,500 vehicles go through here during busy times. There are schools, shops, and offices all together, which makes it very complicated. It usually gets really stuck between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM on weekdays.
When you go to Hinjewadi IT Park, you’ll see that people wait about 38 minutes during busy hours. Around 150,000 IT workers are affected here, and there are more vehicles than before, especially two-wheelers, which make up 65% of the traffic.
Pune Railway Station is another place where traffic gets messy. Many people change from one type of transport to another here, and 89% of commuters wait more than 25 minutes during busy hours. There are also around 3,500 auto-rickshaws close by, making it worse.
Pune is growing fast, but the roads aren’t getting bigger quickly enough. Traffic is increasing by 8.5% every year in these busy areas. Even with new traffic lights and police helping during rush hours, people are taking 15 more minutes to get to work than they did in 2021. This shows that Pune really needs better ways to move around.
