Pune is facing big problems with water shortages and hot weather. Because of this, the need for water tankers has increased a lot, by 40%. This is especially tough for people living in new areas that are now part of the Pune Municipal Corporation. Many families are struggling to get enough water.
Looking at the numbers, we see that water tanker trips have gone up from 81,361 in 2021-22 to 126,110 in 2024-25. That’s a big jump of 55% over four years. Because so many people need water, the prices for tankers have also gone up. Now, it costs between ₹1,800 and ₹2,500 for a tanker, which can be very expensive for families.
The Pune Municipal Corporation only provides 15 free water tankers but needs 75 to help everyone. This means many people in the new areas have to buy water from private suppliers, which is more costly. The city’s water system also has problems, with about 35% of the water getting lost through leaks. This makes it even harder for people to get water.
The government is working on fixing water supply in these new areas, but it’s taking a long time. Many pipeline projects are delayed, so people still depend on tankers for water. This shows how important it’s to build better water systems quickly.
